Mindo is a town north and west of Quito that is noted for butterflies, orchids and hummingbirds. Tubbing on a nearby stream also is popular. Fresh trout appears on most of the several café menus and is a fine choice. The town’s main drag ice cream shop often sells out. The central plaza needs some serious rehab. A Cuban fellow will give you a fine tour in his open truck-like vehicle that he has fashioned out of an ancient, Chinese-built motorcycle. ATVs can be rented by the hour. The prices of all things to do, see and eat are very reasonable.
The drive is a bit more than an hour from Quito.
A “boomlet” of sorts is underway due to growing attention the tiny town is getting from Quito families choosing to establish secondary homes or cabins there.
